SCOTTISH CLOTHING HISTORY & FACTS
Traditional Scottish Clothing — Kilts, Argyle Jackets, and Accessories — are the regional and traditional clothes of Scotland, worn on special occasions and treasured across generations. Traditional Scottish Clothing came into the limelight in the 16th century, famous for its striking appearance. Initially, Tartan was used as the material with crisscrossed patterns running in vertical and horizontal lines. Today it comes in multiple materials to make it more comfortable and wearable; leather, cotton, and wool are among the most popular.

A garment born of Highland tradition
A kilt is a piece of cloth that wraps around the waist in such a way that half of the pleats gather together around the belt. Kilts came into the limelight in the 16th century, famous for their distinctive appearance. The word ‘kilt’ is derived from a Greek root meaning ‘pleated’. The kilt style traditionally came with its accessories, almost a complete fashion statement in itself.
The knee-length kilt we recognize today emerged in the 18th century; before that it was a full-length garment. The first man to wear it represented Scottish clothing in the Highlands. In medieval times, kilts came in brown, white, green, and black colors limited by the berries and plants the clans used to dye them.
Kilts gained widespread popularity in the 19th century, becoming an enduring part of Scottish culture from that point on.

From battlefield to runway
Today, the kilt is worn on all sorts of occasions and sports events. There was a women’s version of kilt known as the arisaid. Women and men were seen wearing them on mainstream media and in fashion shows. With the rising popularity of kilts, the sense of authenticity and correct style also developed.
Kilts were worn for ordinary purposes in British times rather than reserved for special occasions, said to be the only national costume of that era. The traditional kilt has no pockets, so a sporran made of leather or fur is attached to serve the purpose. The sporran was once attached directly to the belt; now it normally hangs on a chain just below the buckle.
Women and girls weren’t traditionally fond of the kilt, they sometimes wore ankle-length skirts with a tartan sash instead. Tartan itself was a sign of peace and prosperity. Today Scotland Clothing has become the national symbol of their clan.
“One of the most iconic things about Scotland is its traditional dress, the kilt. Men and women in kilts are well known for showcasing fashion, but kilts are much more than just a piece of cloth. Scotland Clothing is the pride of the Scottish people.”
